Any discussion about SEO Fundamentals needs to start with Google. With over 75% of the world's web searches now being conducted via Google, it's safe to say that your potential customers will be starting their journey there as well.

Google is the gold standard of Search Engines in both overall search volume and search quality. I'll save the rationale behind Google's dominance for another day, but undoubtedly a large portion of their rise to the top of Search Engine excellence can be attributed to their proprietary algorithm, which is the set of calculations performed against the web's content that decides which web sites they think their viewers will find most relevant for the entered keywords.

Before beginning your search for an SEO, it's a great idea to become an educated consumer and get familiar with how search engines work. I recommend starting here:

When selecting an SEO vendor, here are some key questions to explore.

Do You Just Need SEO Advice, or Do You Need Someone To Implement Recommendations? If you already have a strong, competent web design firm that you you're comfortable with, you may only need the advice of an SEO expert on which keywords offer the best odds of success for your company. Other SEO advice could also include specific, actionable recommendations on how to improve your existing site to best perform against these keywords. If you are looking for an SEO company to handle traffic, conversion, tracking and alaysis and on-going maintenance, then I highly suggest trying to find one company that's capable of handling all of those aspects competently on your behalf. Hint: All elements should be featured on their web site as step 1 of determining if they truly support a holistic approach to your web management.
